Why a Sea Cadet?

Sea Cadets is about “teamwork, mentoring, and inspiration, as well as the ability to define for yourself what is cool.” I borrowed that line from a robotics group which I also mentor, but it sums up the value of this organization to the young people it serves.

Most kids don’t know what they want from life, primarily because they have no (or very limited) exposure to most vocations. The USN Sea Cadet Corps changes that. It exposes a vast array of career alternatives while daring the Cadets to find a niche and challenging them to be exceptional.

Setting sights on a goal and then identifying and executing the steps to achieving the goal is a skill that has served every successful person in virtually every field. One secret to success in life (that is no secret at all) is to find “one thing” and to be good at it.

The Torpedo Squadron 8 is dedicated to introducing Cadets to many exciting and challenging career alternatives – helping them find their own “one thing.” By latching on to a dream early in life, our Cadets can find the steps and support needed, the skills and education needed, and the social network needed to achieve their dreams.
